The last 2 classes have been spent working on Section 2.2 in the text. We have taken notes on the different kinds of matter; compounds, elements, mixtures and mechanical structure (heterogeneous mixtures). Students have been directed to read the section carefully and repeatedly as the more they go over the work the better they will understand it. Today we introduced chemical formulas and students had models to work with to build some simple formulas.
Some of those covered included H2O water CO carbon monoxide H2O2 hyrdogen peroxide

Most students finished working on their worksheet. Has to be handed in by Friday, November 13, 2009, at the latest. test on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Friday's class will be a review for the test.
Test will require students to be aware of the various Workplace Hazardous Materials Symbols and a few brief points on each such as how he products should be handled or the hazards associated with each. In addition students should also know the symbols for household hazardous products such as poison, explosive, corrosive or flammable and the degrees of warning associated with each. Students will also have to answer a few questions similar to what they have been working on in class recently.
Good luck. Study hard.

We have the past three classes working with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Students have received several handouts and worksheets and seem to have a good understanding of the various symbols for hazardous materials and the symbols for hazardous household products. A good summary is found on pages 252-253 of the textbook.
On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, we will be going over Section 2.1 of the textbook and answering the questions posed on those pages. Students are to read pages 72 - 75 in preparation for that class.
Stay healthy.
