We have been doing a lot of work in recent days on becoming familiar with the Periodic Table and naming chemical elements and compounds. Students have completed an assignment in the Library where they did some research on a chemical element. They have also been given notes on how to name chemical compounds and molecules. Will have work to complete in the next couple of classes to further develop their understanding of the concepts.

Classifying Chemicals:Properties and Structure
The last 2 classes have been spent working on Section 2.2 in the text. We have taken notes on the different kinds of matter; compounds, elements, mixtures and mechanical structure (heterogeneous mixtures). Students have been directed to read the section carefully and repeatedly as the more they go over the work the better they will understand it. Today we introduced chemical formulas and students had models to work with to build some simple formulas.
Some of those covered included H2O water CO carbon monoxide H2O2 hyrdogen peroxide

Most students finished working on their worksheet. Has to be handed in by Friday, November 13, 2009, at the latest. test on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Friday's class will be a review for the test.
Test will require students to be aware of the various Workplace Hazardous Materials Symbols and a few brief points on each such as how he products should be handled or the hazards associated with each. In addition students should also know the symbols for household hazardous products such as poison, explosive, corrosive or flammable and the degrees of warning associated with each. Students will also have to answer a few questions similar to what they have been working on in class recently.
Good luck. Study hard.

We have the past three classes working with the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Students have received several handouts and worksheets and seem to have a good understanding of the various symbols for hazardous materials and the symbols for hazardous household products. A good summary is found on pages 252-253 of the textbook.
On Tuesday, November 3, 2009, we will be going over Section 2.1 of the textbook and answering the questions posed on those pages. Students are to read pages 72 - 75 in preparation for that class.
Stay healthy.

Test on Friday, October 16, 2009.
Test will deal with properties of matter including the various states of matter and terms like freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation. How do particles act in the various states of matter. Students should also know about the pH scale and how acids and bases are different. The two worksheets completed are great review for the test. Test will involve about 20 items that can be answered on the sheet provided. Most are short answer.

Students should have a good idea of what is chemistry including what is matter? the various states of matter and how substances can move between the various states including freezing, evaporation and condensation. Today we went over notes on acids and bases which was designed to provide the key points of acids and bases and the pH scale. Students have been given an inclass assignment on acids and bases that includes 21 short answer questions. This will have to be completed by Tuesday, October 6, 2009. Next week we will be looking at Household chemicals and the Workplace and Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Today we did some brief notes on the 3 states in which we can find matter: solid, liquid, gas and how matter can change from one state to another (freezing, melting, evaporation or condensation). Students were given a worksheet on material covered so far. Has to handed in by Friday, September 25 at the latest. Will finish matter in a few classes and move to acid rain and acids, bases.

During the first few classes we have been taking notes and discussing chemistry. In particular we have looked at matter and the properties of matter (mass, volume, density and weight). Today we discussed the three states of matter (solid, gas, liquid). For a good explanation of this you van visit http://www.chem.purdue.edu/ghelp/liquids/character.html Students should have read pages 70-71 in the textbook.
Think about chemistry in your everyday life. It makes it easier to relate to the concept.

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year. I am looking forward to working with students this year in Science 3200. Our course textbook is Science 10: Concepts and Connections. We will be doing Unit 2: Chemical Reactions and Their Practical Applications and Unit 3: Motion and Its Applications. Students have been provided with the textbook and are encouraged to see me when experiencing any difficulty. Lets have a great year.
